UN Chief Calls for Urgent Transition to Renewable Energy

“To achieve net zero emissions by 2050, we need an urgent transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.”

This was what the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during the virtual COP26 Roundtable on Clean Power Transition.

With fossil fuel emissions hitting higher marks than ever before, there’s increased pressure on countries to replace the usage of fossil fuels with renewable sources. Many companies have already begun looking for alternative energy sources to fossil fuels. But this trend needs to improve a lot more to curb harmful emissions.

What Is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is often referred to as the clean energy generated from natural sources that can be replenished easily. For example, many are beginning to use the Sun to generate electricity and for running equipment. In this case, the Sun acts as a natural source of energy as it can be easily replenished.

There are many other sources like wind, hydro, tidal, geothermal and biomass.

Harnessing nature’s power to generate energy is one of the most efficient and innovative ways to power our new technological developments without harming the environment. The usage of renewable energy is expected to rise to 24% by the year 2030, most of which will come from wind and solar energy.

Why Should You Use Renewable Energy?

renewable energy sources

We can give you so many reasons why you should use renewable energy for generating electricity. Here are a few top reasons:

1. Self-Replenishing

We’ve reached a point where fossil fuels are fast depleting. But since renewable energy is obtained from natural sources, it’s self-replenishing.

2. Makes Electricity More Accessible

When we want to generate power from fossil fuels, we require a huge plant setup and big machinery. But, generating renewable energy requires far less infrastructure.

Also, unlike fossil fuel like oil and gas that are only available in certain parts of the world, common renewable energy like the Sun and the wind is available everywhere. We can use common technology to tap into its power and use it for electricity irrespective of where we are.

By just installing solar panels in an area, we can generate power for a home, a colony or even a small village. This makes it possible to bring renewable energy to the houses in various interior regions that weren’t previously possible.

3. Causes No Harm to Our Environment

The energy derived from oil and gas leads to toxic gases that get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere. These emissions lead to global warming, which is the most threatening thing for the lives on Earth.

However, when you use energy sources like the Sun, wind or tidal power to generate power, the process is entirely safe for us as well as the environment.

4. Leads to More Economic Development

The requirement for labour in generating renewable energy is far higher than the fossil fuel industry. This leads to more employment opportunities that create a positive impact on economic development across the globe.

5. Conserves Our Natural Resources

When we diversify the power generation, we can improve our world’s energy security and have sufficient fuel reserves. We can provide power to different locations far and wide and conserve natural resources.

UN Chief on Renewable Energy

antonio guterres

In the virtual Roundtable Conference conducted a few days ago, the UN Chief, António Guterres, spoke about the importance of shifting to renewable energy to protect our environment.

He referred to the 789 million people in developing countries living without electricity access and called it a massive injustice to sustainable development. Mr. Guterres also urged the countries to commit strongly to shift to renewable sources and put an end to fossil fuel subsidies.

Mr. Guterres requested the support of developed countries to transition to “a clean, sustainable energy pathway. He stressed the countries to reduce energy production from fossil fuels by 6% annually by adopting renewable energy sources. .”

He said that creating a sustainable environment would mean job opportunities for millions of people, better infrastructure and a resilient future – all of which will transform our world.

Conclusion

Advocating for the use of renewable energy and sustainable practices is what our world needs right now. As individuals, we can start from our homes to conserve energy and try switching to renewable energy by installing solar panels.
